The renowned Lisbon-based, Portuguese artist Joana Vasconcelos (born 1971) investigates mythologies and iconographies to examine matters of gender, class, and national identity. To make her works, mostly sculptures, she re-elaborates familiar objects and images, often employing artisanal techniques and craft-related materials as part of her creative process. Her practice reflects on the tensions between high and popular culture, the private and public spheres, the domestic and the political, tradition and modernity.
Vasconcelos represented Portugal in the 55th International Art Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia (2013) with a major new project, the Trafaria Praia, in which a cacilheiro, or Lisbon ferryboat, was transformed into a floating pavilion and work. This publication documents it from the initial research stages to the final public unveiling, as well as the intellectual references that inform it, through magnificent full-color photography and essays by the curator as well as acclaimed Portuguese scholars.
